Flap Making Technology

The Motwani LASIK Institute has the widest, most technologically advanced array of microkeratomes- the flap making devices necessary for the various LASIK procedures.

The Motwani LASIK Institute is the first laser center in San Diego to have the Ziemer Femtosecond  Laser Da Vinci laser microkeratome for the Z-Lasik System.  This is the latest laser device to make the corneal flap necessary for “All Laser LASIK.”  This device has major advantages over prior laser microkeratome systems.  It uses much less energy, thereby causing minimal trauma to the cornea during flap creation, and it creates a smooth flap without “tissue bridges.”  These tissue bridges are what cause the Intralase femtosecond laser flaps to require manual breaking of bonds and effort to lift the flap.  This also lowers the trauma to the cornea.  This gentler overall approach causes much less inflammation, decreasing post-operative pain and blurriness, and also decreasing the time for the vision to clear than the Intralase system.

The Ziemer Femtosecond LDV has the ability to make flaps at multiple thickness levels, allowing full customization of the flap size and depth to allow the surgeon to customize the flap creation process. Even more importantly, flap creation is very reliable, reproducible, with very little variance in flap thickness between eyes and patients.

The Ziemer Femtosecond LDV laser head is also mounted on an articulating arm which can perform the flap creation right at the excimer laser . The Intralase femtosecond system requires the patient to patient to move from one laser to the other, increasing time and patient stress.  The Ziemer articulating arm allows the patient to lay in one procedure bed and to dramatically shorten the time for the All Laser LASIK process.

Dr. Motwani has also has the finest blade microkeratome- The Moria Evolution M2.  It is very reliable, makes perfect, smooth flaps, and has the ability to make flaps at various depths.  It is quick and very smooth, and creates scalloped flap edges that minimize epithelial ingrowth.

Dr. Motwani is the only refractive surgeon in San Diego to perform the Epi-LASIK procedure.  This is a very specialized procedure that creates an epithelial only flap, allowing for a surface ablation procedure but with a protective covering flap of the clear skin that covers the surface of the eye.  This is performed with the Moria E-LASIK epithelial flap creation system.  Dr. Motwani has performed laser correction on very complex, high prescriptions with the Moria E-LASIK device. These patients would not normally be able to have laser vision correction with any other procedure.  He has successfully corrected eyes up to -15.00 diopters of myopia with this special procedure.
